Center district is the heart of Madrid, with narrow streets full of people, shops, bars and academies of all type and condition. It is a commercial and pass-through area, where the famous Kilómetro Cero is located, meeting spot both for tourists and locals, where you can find buildings and emblematic areas of the capital city, such as the Palacio Real or the Plaza Mayor. Lately, houses’ facades, which are mostly from last century, have been renovated, and some lovers of the hustle and bustle of the center have reformed the flats. The headquarters of several companies are in this neighbourhood, as well as all kinds of shops, commercial centers and street vendors. Furthermore, in Puerta del Sol, there are several shops that can’t be found anywhere else in Madrid, and there are plentiful pubs, coffee shops and old taverns, being the latter the tourists’ favorite.
Gran Via is one of the main streets of Madrid, starting in Alcala Street and ending at the Plaza de España. It is an important landmark in the city from a commercial point of view, tourism and leisure. It is famous for its cinemas and theaters, though in recent years some have closed and others have successfully converted to musical theater, so the stretch between the Plaza de Callao and Plaza de España is known as the Broadway of Madrid.
The stretch between the Red de San Luis and Plaza de Callao now hosts many international and fashion stores.
On this road lies the Telefónica building, tallest skyscraper in Spain in 1929, with 88 meters, the Metropolis Building, first skyscraper in Madrid, Edificio España, 117 meters, built in 1953 or the Torre de Madrid, 142 meters, was the tallest skyscraper in Europe.
The Plaza de Callao is located at the end of the street "Preciados", and in the middle of the Gran Via. As the Gran Vía, Plaza de Callao was built between 1910 and 1940, and is one of the most renowned meeting places of the city with great shopping and gastronomic offer.
In addition, in this area is located the famous Puerta del Sol, where you can find the so-called Kilometer Zero of all Spanish roads. The Post House clock especially emphasizes, built and donated in the nineteenth century by José Rodríguez de Losada, and whose bells of 12 midnight December 31 marks the tradition oft eating the twelve grapes of the vast majority of the Spanish peolple.
